Hip-hop in Hanoi? Not as unlikely a duo as it might sound. The hip-hop movement's beginning coincided with the country's economic boom, giving rise to a group of hip-hoppers interested in not just the moves and lyrics of western hip-hop but also the style. Hip-hop in Hanoi is not fueled by a desire to defy traditional Vietnamese culture or politics. It is a way of expressing what it means to be young and part of a generation that grew up in a strikingly different Hanoi than the one the hip-hoppers’ parents knew.
